Imelda Marcos, known as the Steel Butterfly or Iron Butterfly. A Filipino politician and former First Lady and wife of Ferdinand Marcos, 10th President of the Philippines. Both were notoriously known for their lavish lifestyle while their country was suffering financially and politically. In 1986, her husband was overthrown by the People Power Revolution and they both fled to Hawaii. Marcos was succeeded by Corazon C. Aquino, widow of Benigno Aquino, Jr. and was Marcos’ political opponent. In 1983, Aquino was assassinated at the Manila International Airport during his return to the Philippines after years of political exile. It was believed (and still is) that Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos were involved in the assassination, which ignited the People Power Revolution of 1986.
After the Marcos’ fled Malacañang Palace, it was reported that Imelda left behind 15 mink coats, 508 gowns and 1,000 handbags. She was most known for her extravagant shoe collection, which totaled to an estimate of 3,400 pairs. Imelda and Ferdinand were accounted for being the world’s biggest thefts. Her husband died of kidney failure and in 1990 she was put before a New York court—accused of stealing $220 million. Don’t be fooled, this portion was only a fraction of their “wealth.” The overall estimates reached up to $50 billion. Although she was acquitted, Imelda still faced 901 lawsuits.
